Best Hotels in Chiang Rai: City Centre, River, and Beyond

Chiang Rai is a far more manageable city than its southern neighbour Chiang Mai - compact enough that most of the centre is walkable, with fewer hotels but strong quality across all budget levels. The main choice is between city-centre walkability and the quieter river or hillside properties outside town.

City Centre (Clock Tower and Night Bazaar Area)

The city centre is defined loosely by the clock tower, Baandam (Black House) cultural area north of centre, and the Night Bazaar along Phahon Yothin Road. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the Saturday Night Market and the main tour booking offices for White Temple excursions.

Le Meridien Chiang Rai Resort is the best full-service option in the city-centre zone. The property sits on the Mae Kok River but is only 10 minutes’ walk from the clock tower. Rooms are large by Thai hotel standards; the riverside setting and three-pool complex are the main draws. Rates approximately ฿4,500–7,000 per night for a standard room; river-view rooms command a premium. The breakfast buffet is one of the better hotel spreads in the city.

Wiang Inn Hotel is a long-established mid-range choice on Phahon Yothin Road - the main artery into the city centre. A good base for those spending most of their time on day trips and needing a reliable return address.

Budget Guesthouses in the Walking Street Area

The stretch between the clock tower and the Saturday Walking Street (Thanon Tambon Wiang) has a cluster of budget guesthouses and small hotels aimed at backpackers and solo travellers.

Baan Bua Guest House offers simple but clean rooms from ฿450–750 per night. Popular with cyclists doing the Golden Triangle loop. No pool; the social area in the common room is functional. Good for early-morning departures (buses to Chiang Saen, Mae Sai leave from the nearby terminal).
