The Kumphawapi Red Lotus Sea (Thale Bua Daeng) blooms December to February, peaking in January. It is at its most dramatic at dawn - lotus flowers open before 8 am and begin closing by late morning. Boat trips run from Kumphawapi pier, approximately 45 km south-east of Udon Thani.

How do I get to Udon Thani?

Udon Thani International Airport (UTH) is one of Thailand's busier regional airports, with multiple daily flights from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang - around 1 hour. Buses run from Bangkok Mo Chit terminal in about 8–10 hours. The Bangkok-Nong Khai express train stops at Udon Thani in approximately 10–11 hours.

Udon Thani is a busy, self-contained city of around 400,000 that has been quietly important since the Vietnam War era, when a large US air base here shaped the economy and the city’s unusually cosmopolitan character. Today it is one of Isaan’s most liveable cities - clean streets, excellent food markets, a large expat community (with good international restaurants as a result), and strategic access to the Laos border and the Ban Chiang archaeological site.

City centre: Prajak Road and commercial core

The city centre clusters around Prajak Road (Thanon Prajak Sillapakhom), the Central Plaza Udon Thani mall, and the Hua Rot bus terminal area. This zone has the densest accommodation, the closest airport transfer routes, and easy access to the Udon Walking Street night market.

Budget: Tok Boutique Hostel on Prajak Road runs dorms from approximately ฿250–380 and private rooms from ฿900–1,300 as of 2026. Social atmosphere, well-positioned for the night market.
Mid-range: Centara Hotel Udon Thani, on Phosi Road near the city centre, runs approximately ฿1,400–2,200 with a good pool and consistent quality - the most popular mid-range address for business travellers and regional visitors.
Luxury: Pullman Udon Thani, on Thahan Road with a large pool and full spa, starts around ฿2,800–4,500 as of 2026. The most polished address in the city - business hotel quality at prices significantly below equivalent Bangkok properties.

Nong Prajak Park: lakeside and liveable

Nong Prajak Reservoir, a large urban lake in the north of the city, is Udon Thani’s leisure heart - a 3 km jogging track around the water, evening food stalls, pedal boats, and families cycling after work. Staying near here gives the most pleasant daily environment in the city, with the city centre a 10-minute ride away.

Budget: Several small guesthouses and family-run hotels on Phon Phisai Road near the park run approximately ฿400–700 for basic rooms with air conditioning.
Mid-range: UD Town Hotel, near the park’s south end, runs approximately ฿900–1,600 and is popular for its proximity to Udon Thani’s best evening walking areas.
Upper: At Udon Thani Town Hotel, on the east bank of the lake, rooms start around ฿1,800–2,800. Park views, small pool, and genuinely relaxed surroundings - the best balance of atmosphere and comfort.

Airport corridor: quick transit convenience

The airport sits 3 km south-west of the city centre. Several business hotels cluster on Phon Phisai Road between the airport and the centre, catering to domestic Thai business travellers with early flights.

Mid-range: Napalai Hotel near the airport road runs approximately ฿900–1,400. Clean, predictable, and convenient for early morning departures. Not an interesting area but maximally practical.

Ban Chiang day trip logistics

Ban Chiang village is 50 km east of Udon Thani and home to one of Southeast Asia’s most important prehistoric archaeological sites - Bronze Age pottery, burial sites, and metalwork from 2100 BCE, all in a UNESCO-listed site with an excellent museum. Entry approximately ฿150 as of 2026; open daily 8 am to 4 pm.

Getting there: local buses from Udon Thani’s Rungsina Market bus stand take approximately 1–1.5 hours for around ฿50. Private taxi or songthaew approximately ฿300–500 each way. Most Udon Thani guesthouses can arrange a driver for a half-day trip, typically ฿600–1,000 total including waiting time.

Udon Thani Walking Street

Udon Thani’s Walking Street night market, on Prajak Road near the city centre, runs Thursday to Sunday from about 5 pm to 10 pm. It is one of Isaan’s best night markets - street food, Isaan silk, handicrafts, and live music. Strongly recommended for any visitor spending a night in the city.

Our verdict

City centre (Prajak Road) for easy transport and market access. Nong Prajak lakeside for the most pleasant environment. Either is fine - the city is compact enough that location is not critical. Udon Thani is best treated as a two-night base: one evening at the Walking Street, a Ban Chiang day trip, and an onward move to Nong Khai or back to Bangkok.
