Full Moon Party Koh Phangan: What to Expect and How to Prepare
What the Full Moon Party is
A monthly beach party on Haad Rin Nok (Sunrise Beach) on the southeastern tip of Koh Phangan. It began in the mid-1980s with a small group of travellers and grew through word-of-mouth to its current scale of 10,000–30,000 attendees per month. It is the largest regular beach party in the world.
The party runs from approximately 9pm until sunrise (6am). The beach is lined with sound systems, fire shows, DJ stages, and bars serving buckets (pre-mixed spirit cocktails in sandcastle buckets, ฿150–250 each). Every bar has its own music — the party has no single stage or programme, just the accumulation of sound systems along the sand.
When to go
The Full Moon Party happens on or close to the full moon each month. When the full moon falls on a Buddhist holiday, the event is typically moved forward 1–2 days. Check current dates at the official Koh Phangan Full Moon Party calendar.
Best months: January, February, March — large crowds but good weather, low humidity. December (especially the December 31 event) is the biggest of the year.
Quieter months: September and October (smaller attendance, wetter season). These are better for those who want the experience without extreme crowds.
Getting to Haad Rin
From Thong Sala pier (ferry arrival point): Songthaew taxi to Haad Rin, ฿100–150 per person, 30–45 minutes. Run until early evening. After 8pm, the direct songthaew stops — night songthaews charge ฿300–500.
From other beaches: Most guesthouses run party-night transport to Haad Rin. Check with your accommodation — many offer a return pickup at 6am.
From Koh Samui: Haad Rin Queen speedboat ferries run direct from Bophut and Bangrak piers on Koh Samui to Haad Rin pier on party nights. Return ferries run at 3am and 6am. ฿400–600 return.
From Surat Thani or the mainland: Same ferry as normal (to Thong Sala), then songthaew to Haad Rin.
Accommodation for Full Moon Party night
Book 4–8 weeks ahead. Haad Rin accommodation is fully booked for party nights during high season (December–March). Minimum stay requirements of 2–3 nights are standard at most properties.
Options:
- Stay in Haad Rin — walking distance to the party, no transport concern, more expensive.
- Stay on another beach and travel in — cheaper accommodation, but you’re dependent on songthaews and need to plan the return.
- Stay on Koh Samui and ferry over — the return speedboat gets you back early morning, works for a single night visit.
What to bring
- Shoes or sandals — broken glass on the beach is a genuine hazard. Flip-flops are fine; bare feet are not.
- Small bag — enough for phone, cash, one change of clothes. Bag theft is uncommon but phones are targets.
- Cash — ฿1,500–2,500 covers transport both ways, drinks, and food without being excessive.
- Water — dehydration is a real risk. Drink water between drinks.
- Charged phone — and the number of your accommodation saved.
- Group meeting point — pick a landmark (the main stage, the Ko Pha-Ngan Bar sign) before separating in the crowd.
What not to bring
- Valuables: Leave your camera, passport, and extra cash at the guesthouse.
- Drugs: Thailand’s drug laws are very serious. Police presence around the Full Moon Party has increased significantly. Penalties for possession include lengthy prison sentences.
- New white clothing: The neon paint that’s everywhere at the party does not wash out easily.
On the night
The party builds from 9pm and peaks between midnight and 4am. The beach stretches around 600 metres; the density is highest in the centre around the main bar stages. The northern and southern ends of the beach are less crowded.
Fire shows (rope spinning, fire limbo, flaming jump-rope) run throughout the night. The level of skill varies — the performers at the established bars are genuinely impressive.
Bucket caution: Pre-mixed alcohol buckets are a Full Moon Party tradition (Red Bull, Thai whisky, Coke over ice). Buy from established bars with proper ventilation and visible ingredients. Cases of methanol contamination in cheap spirits have been documented in Thailand — the risk at name-brand bars is low, but roadside vendors with unlabelled bottles present a real hazard.
Swimming: The Gulf water is directly adjacent to the party. Swimming while intoxicated has killed people. Stay on the beach.
After the party
Songthaews from Haad Rin to Thong Sala restart around 6am. Most bars close progressively between 6am and 9am. Many partygoers sleep on the beach or at Haad Rin guesthouses until afternoon ferries. If connecting to Koh Samui, the morning speedboats from Haad Rin pier run from 8:30am.
Is it worth it?
For the atmosphere, yes — there is nothing else quite like a beach with 20,000 people and a dozen sound systems. For the hangover, possibly not. The decision often comes down to where you are in your trip: if you’re already on Koh Phangan for a few days and the timing aligns, the Full Moon Party is worth experiencing once. If you’re rerouting your itinerary specifically for it, calibrate expectations accordingly — it’s a beach party at scale, not a transformative experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
- When is the next Full Moon Party?
- The Full Moon Party happens monthly on or around the full moon. Exact dates shift by 1–2 days when the full moon falls on a Buddhist holiday. Check the official Koh Phangan Full Moon Party website for confirmed upcoming dates — the schedule is published months ahead.
- Is the Full Moon Party safe?
- Reasonably safe for those who exercise normal caution. Primary risks: drink spiking (never leave drinks unattended, avoid buckets from unlicensed vendors), broken glass on the beach (wear shoes or sandals at all times), swimming while intoxicated (water is directly next to the party — people drown every year), and motorcycle taxis at 4am. Solo travellers should have a meeting point arranged with their group.
- How many people attend the Full Moon Party?
- Between 10,000 and 30,000 depending on the month. December and January parties are the largest; September and October are smaller. The entire Haad Rin beach (around 600 metres) is used as the party venue.
