Koh Phi Phi — the island and how it works

Koh Phi Phi is two islands: Phi Phi Don (the inhabited one, where all accommodation is) and Phi Phi Leh (the uninhabited national park island famous for Maya Bay). When people talk about staying on Koh Phi Phi, they mean Phi Phi Don.

Phi Phi Don has no roads and no cars. Everything is on foot or by longtail boat. The main settlement — Ton Sai Village — sits on a narrow isthmus between two bays, with the ferry pier on one side and the beach on the other. Most accommodation, restaurants, tour operators, and bars are within walking distance of each other.

The island is small enough that location is more about noise level and vibe than logistics. The bigger question is which beach area suits your preference for quiet versus convenience.

Ton Sai Village — convenient but noisy

Ton Sai is the island’s hub — dense, lively, and loud after dark. The beach in front of the village (Ao Ton Sai) is the ferry landing beach, not a swimming beach. The better beach on this end of the isthmus is Ao Dalum on the north side, a short walk through the village.

Bars in Ton Sai run until 2–3am, and the sound carries across the narrow isthmus. Budget accommodation here tends to be directly behind or above the bar strip.

Budget options (฿800–1,200/night):

PP Erawan Palms Resort — A reasonable mid-budget option a short walk from the pier. Air-conditioned rooms, small pool. Around ฿900–1,300/night. Better maintained than many in the same price bracket.

Phi Phi Nice Beach Resort — Basic bungalows near Ao Dalum bay on the quieter north side of the village. Fan and air-con options. Fan rooms from ฿700; air-con from ฿1,000.

Mid-range (฿1,800–3,000/night):

PP Princess Resort — A well-positioned mid-range resort on the beach at Ao Dalum. Pool, restaurant, comfortable rooms. The north-facing beach here is calmer and cleaner than the pier side. Rooms from ฿1,800–2,800/night depending on room type and season. One of the better mid-range choices in the village.

Phi Phi Banyan Villa — Up the hillside from Ton Sai with sea views over both bays. Quiet for a village-area property; the climb to the rooms keeps noise down. Around ฿1,500–2,500/night. Some rooms have outstanding viewpoints across the isthmus.

Long Beach — quieter and better for swimming

Long Beach (Hat Yao) is on the southeast coast, about 1.5km from Ton Sai. Getting there: 20-minute walk over the headland, or 5 minutes by longtail from the pier (฿50–80 per boat for the short hop).

The beach faces south and has cleaner, calmer water than the pier side. It is considerably quieter than Ton Sai — guesthouses here don’t have bars attached, and sound from the village doesn’t carry this far.

Long Beach Bungalows — One of the original beach guesthouses on Hat Yao. Fan bungalows and some air-con rooms. Direct beach access. Around ฿1,000–1,800/night for a private bungalow. Basic facilities but very good beach position.

Viking Nature Resort — A slightly more polished option on the Long Beach hillside. Air-conditioned bungalows, garden setting, pool. Around ฿2,000–3,500/night. Better maintained than the budget end of Long Beach.

Who should choose Long Beach: Anyone who wants to swim from their accommodation, prioritises quiet evenings, or has already done the Ton Sai nightlife experience and wants something different.

Viewpoint Hill — very quiet, requires a climb

The hills above Ton Sai village have a scattering of accommodation accessible only on foot via steep paths. The reward is isolation, elevated sea views, and near-total quiet. The downside is the climb every time you return from the beach or village — not ideal with luggage or in heat.

Phi Phi Hill Resort — Bungalows set into the hillside with sea views. A genuine escape from the village scene. Around ฿1,200–2,000/night depending on room and season.

This area suits travellers who have been on Phi Phi before and know exactly what they’re trading off: convenience for peace.

Luxury options

Zeavola Resort — The most consistently praised luxury property on Phi Phi Don, located at the island’s northeast tip (Cape Laem Tong), well away from Ton Sai. Thai-style villas in a garden setting, beachfront, adults only, genuine privacy. The beach at Laem Tong is among the cleanest and least crowded on the island. No longtail noise. Getting here requires a dedicated speedboat from the main pier (included in transfers for guests). Rooms from ฿6,000–12,000+/night. The price difference from mid-range is significant, but the experience is entirely different from staying in Ton Sai.

Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort — A large resort complex on Ao Lo Bakao, on the east coast. Multiple pools, beach, restaurant, spa. More mainstream than Zeavola but at a similar remote-island premium. Rooms from ฿5,000–9,000/night.

Booking timing

December–March (peak): Koh Phi Phi is at maximum capacity during this period — especially Christmas and New Year. Book accommodation and ferry tickets 3–4 weeks ahead minimum. Popular mid-range properties fill entirely.

April–June (shoulder): Good weather, manageable crowds, shorter booking windows. A week in advance is usually sufficient for non-peak weekends.

July–August (second wave): European summer brings a second influx. Book ahead, particularly for mid-range.

May, September–October (low season): Monsoon period. Ferries from Phuket and Krabi can be cancelled in rough weather. Some guesthouses close on Phi Phi entirely. Prices fall substantially for those who do visit.

Budget summary

LevelPrice/nightArea
Budget (fan)฿700–1,200Ton Sai, Long Beach
Mid-range฿1,800–3,500Ton Sai (Ao Dalum), Long Beach
Luxury฿6,000–12,000+Laem Tong (Zeavola), Ao Lo Bakao

The gap between mid-range and luxury on Phi Phi is larger than on most Thai islands — there is very little in the ฿3,500–6,000 bracket. It either stops at mid-range or jumps to the remote resort tier.
