How to choose your area

Phuket’s beaches and hotel zones are distinct enough that where you stay determines the trip. The main west coast beaches from north to south: Bang Tao → Surin → Kamala → Patong → Karon → Kata → Kata Noi → Nai Harn. Old Town is inland, 20 minutes from the nearest beach.

Patong

The most developed beach on the island — 3km of sand with the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, bars, and nightlife. Most hotel types are represented here, from cheap guesthouses one block from the beach to branded international hotels on the beachfront.

Budget (฿600–1,500): Numerous guesthouses on the streets running perpendicular to the beach (Soi Bangla area and north of it). Fan rooms with shared bathrooms at the cheapest end; A/C en-suite at ฿1,000–1,500. Walk 10–15 minutes to the beach.

Mid-range (฿2,000–5,000): Pool hotels clustered between the beach road and Bangla Road. A/C rooms with pool access, adequate size. Not beachfront but walkable.

Upscale (฿6,000+): The beachfront strip has several large resort hotels. The Novotel Phuket Vintage Park and Amari Phuket are reliable international options in this range.

Best for: First-time visitors, nightlife, convenience, large groups. Avoid if noise is a concern — Bangla Road is loud until 3am.

Kata and Karon

Two adjacent beaches south of Patong, quieter and more family-oriented. Kata has a lively but manageable beach village; Karon is wider and slightly less developed. Both have a full range of mid-range options and several good boutique hotels in the hills above the beach.

Budget: Guesthouses along the road behind both beaches, ฿600–1,500. Kata’s side streets have better-value fan bungalows than Karon.

Mid-range (฿2,000–6,000): The best value concentration on the island for this bracket — many pool hotels within 200 metres of the beach. Several boutique guesthouses on the Kata headland above the beach have views and good quality for the price.

Upscale: Kata Rocks (Kata headland) and Kata Noi’s small resort cluster offer the best quality south-coast luxury options.

Best for: Families, mid-range budget, beach without Patong noise. Kata Noi (the small beach at the southern end) is the best beach in the area.

Kamala

A quieter, more residential beach 10 minutes north of Patong by road. Fewer hotels than Patong but a more relaxed atmosphere. The beach is good and less crowded. Several independent restaurants and a small village centre. The Keemala resort (฿25,000+/night) is among the top luxury properties in Thailand.

Mid-range (฿2,500–6,000): A handful of smaller hotels and boutique guesthouses, typically better maintained than equivalent Patong options. The Layalina Hotel and similar properties offer a quieter experience.

Best for: Couples, repeat visitors to Phuket who want less noise, those wanting quality at lower prices than Surin or Bang Tao.

Bang Tao and Laguna

The northern resort zone — a complex of 5 large hotels around an artificial lagoon (Laguna Phuket). The beach is long (8km) and much quieter than Patong. This area skews heavily towards luxury.

Laguna resort complex: Anantara, Cassia, and Banyan Tree properties share the lagoon. Boat transfer between hotels. Prices generally ฿8,000–30,000/night.

Outside the complex: Some smaller guesthouses and mid-range hotels along Bang Tao beach road, though fewer options than the southern beaches.

Best for: Families wanting a full resort experience, honeymoons, those who don’t want to leave the property.

Nai Harn

The southernmost developed beach, 45 minutes from the airport. The beach is excellent — sheltered, less crowded than the north, with a natural park protecting one end from development. The town behind has good local restaurants and a lake popular with expat cyclists.

Budget (฿700–1,500): Several guesthouses on the road into town and around the lake. The local atmosphere means better-value eating and fewer tourist markups.

Mid-range (฿2,000–5,000): The Nai Harn (formerly Royal Phuket Yacht Club) overlooks the beach and is the main upscale option — small but well positioned.

Best for: Those who’ve done Phuket before and want a quieter south coast base; good for scooter exploration of the southern cape.

Old Town

20 minutes from the nearest beach by scooter, Old Town makes a poor base for a beach holiday but is the best area for Phuket’s colonial architecture, restaurants, and a genuinely local atmosphere.

Numerous boutique hotels have been developed in the restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses — The Memory at On On Hotel (the original On On Hotel, featured in “The Beach”) is the most famous, with rooms from ฿1,200/night.

Best for: City-focused visits, food and culture, travellers not prioritising beach time.

Practical booking notes

  • High season (December–February): book 6–12 weeks ahead for beachfront properties
  • Low season (May–October): rates drop 30–50%; some Patong hotels close entirely in August–September
  • The rainy season (May–October) affects the west-facing beaches most — east-coast accommodation doesn’t exist in Phuket so there’s no easy weather shelter on-island
  • Airport taxis are metered but use a fixed ฿150 surcharge; for long-distance hotels (Nai Harn, Kata) Grab is often cheaper than taxi touts

Frequently Asked Questions

Which area of Phuket is best for hotels?
Depends on what you want. Patong for nightlife and convenience (most hotels, biggest range). Kata/Karon for families and mid-range beach holidays with less noise. Kamala or Bang Tao for quieter luxury. Nai Harn or Rawai for the south coast: local feel, good restaurants, away from tourist crowds. Old Town for cultural interest and access to restaurants, poor beach access.
How much do hotels cost in Phuket?
Budget guesthouses (fan room, basic) start at ฿500–800/night. Mid-range hotels with pool: ฿2,000–5,000/night. Good boutique hotels: ฿4,000–8,000/night. Beachfront resorts: ฿8,000–25,000+/night. Phuket is the most expensive destination in Thailand — prices are 30–50% higher than comparable accommodation in Chiang Mai or Krabi.
