Koh Samui vs Phuket — choosing the right Thai island

Koh Samui and Phuket are Thailand’s two most popular island destinations. They attract similar visitor profiles but offer noticeably different experiences.

Location and Access

Phuket: On the Andaman Sea (west coast of Thailand). Phuket International Airport (HKT) has direct flights from Europe and elsewhere. Large island — 543 km².

Koh Samui: In the Gulf of Thailand (east coast). Koh Samui Airport (USM) has flights from Bangkok (1 hour) and some international routes. Smaller island — 228 km².

Beaches

Phuket highlights: Nai Harn (south, quieter), Kata Noi, Freedom Beach (hike in), Bang Tao (north, upscale), Surin (upscale).

Koh Samui highlights: Lamai Beach (locals’ favourite), Maenam (north, quiet), Bophut (Fisherman’s Village area, relaxed), Silver Beach.

Note: Patong Beach in Phuket is the most developed and crowded — excellent for nightlife, not for those seeking a peaceful beach. Chaweng in Koh Samui is the equivalent.

Nightlife

Phuket: More extensive. Patong’s Bangla Road is Thailand’s most infamous nightlife strip. Phuket also has a growing upscale bar scene, beach clubs (Catch Beach Club, Café del Mar), and rooftop bars.

Koh Samui: Good but lower-key. Chaweng has clubs and bars. The overall atmosphere is calmer than Patong.

Activities and Day Trips

Phuket advantages: Koh Phi Phi day trips (70 km by speedboat), James Bond Island, Phang Nga Bay tours, excellent scuba diving, Phuket Old Town.

Koh Samui advantages: Koh Phangan (Full Moon Party, 20 min by ferry), Koh Tao (world-class dive site, 2 hours), Ang Thong Marine Park, Elephant Hills rainforest camp.
