Phuket Airport Transfers | The Thailand Guides

Phuket International Airport (IATA: HKT) sits at the northern tip of the island, roughly 45 minutes from the busiest beach areas in the south. There is no rail connection and public bus coverage from the airport is limited, so getting your transfer right matters - prices vary significantly between options, and the airport’s official taxi desk operates on fixed-rate fares rather than meters.

Airport Layout

The airport has two terminals (domestic and international) connected by a short walkway. Ground transport is on the departures level (Level 2) for taxis and limousines, and immediately outside arrivals for Grab pickup. The official taxi desk is signposted inside the arrivals hall - look for the “AOT Limousine” counter, which handles both standard taxis and premium vehicles.

Metered Taxi - Not Available Here

Unlike Bangkok, Phuket Airport does not offer metered taxis for departing passengers. The airport operates a fixed-rate taxi system through the AOT Limousine desk. You pay upfront at the counter and receive a voucher for your driver. While this removes the uncertainty of the meter, it also means there is no negotiating - prices are standardised and clearly displayed at the counter.

Approximate fixed-rate fares from HKT (as of 2026):

To Phuket Old Town / Phuket City: approximately THB 350–450 (20–25 minutes)
To Bang Tao / Laguna area: approximately THB 500–600 (25–35 minutes)
To Kamala Beach: approximately THB 550–650 (30–40 minutes)
To Patong Beach: approximately THB 650–750 (35–45 minutes)
To Karon / Kata Beach: approximately THB 700–850 (40–50 minutes)
To Rawai / Nai Harn: approximately THB 800–950 (50–60 minutes)

Journey times above are off-peak estimates. The main road south through Thalang and into Patong can slow significantly during the November–March high season when tourist traffic is heaviest.

Grab - The Flexible Alternative

Grab operates at Phuket Airport with a designated pickup zone outside arrivals. You will need a local SIM card or roaming data to book through the app. Fares are calculated dynamically, but typical costs to popular areas run approximately:

To Patong: approximately THB 450–700 (as of 2026, depending on surge)
To Kata or Karon: approximately THB 500–750
To Phuket Old Town: approximately THB 200–300

The main advantage of Grab over the AOT fixed-rate desk is transparency - you know the fare before you get in, and payment is through the app. The downside is surge pricing during peak arrival times and occasional driver cancellations when wait times at the airport pickup zone are long.

Shared Minivan - Budget Option for Patong

Operators including Phuket Smart Bus and various hotel-run shuttle services offer shared minivans and air-conditioned buses from HKT to major beach destinations. These are significantly cheaper than taxis but require flexibility on timing - they depart when the vehicle is full, or on a fixed schedule.

The Phuket Smart Bus (also called the Airport Bus) runs a fixed route from the airport along the main highway, stopping at key points including Bang Tao, Surin Beach, Kamala and Patong. Fares are approximately THB 100–170 per person to Patong (as of 2026). Note: this is not a door-to-door service - you are dropped at a stop near your destination, not at your hotel gate.

Minivan operators with hotel drop-off service (typically pre-booked online or at the airport kiosk) charge approximately THB 150–250 per person to Patong, THB 170–280 to Kata or Karon. These are worthwhile if you are travelling solo or as a couple without heavy luggage.

Private Transfer - Best for Families and Late Arrivals

A pre-booked private transfer offers a named driver waiting at arrivals, a fixed price, and door-to-door delivery with no stops. This is the most stress-free option - particularly if you are arriving after a long overnight flight or coordinating a family with luggage.

Operators including Kiwitaxi, Welcome Pickups and GetTransfer offer online pre-booking with fixed fares. Typical private sedan rates to Patong start from approximately THB 800–1,100 (as of 2026). Larger vans for groups are available at higher rates, and are often comparable in price to booking two taxi vouchers at the AOT desk.

For premium service - leather interiors, refreshments, complimentary waiting time - the airport’s AOT Limousine desk offers upgraded vehicle classes at roughly 1.5–2x the standard taxi rate.

Getting to Railay or Phi Phi from Phuket Airport

Railay Beach and Koh Phi Phi are not directly accessible from Phuket Airport by road. From HKT you have two practical routes:

Via Krabi: Take a private transfer or shared minivan to Krabi Town or Ao Nang (approximately 3–3.5 hours by road via the Sarasin Bridge and Route 4) and then a longtail or speedboat to Railay. This route makes sense if Railay is your first stop.

Via Phuket Port (Rassada Pier): Take a transfer to Phuket Town and then a high-speed ferry to Koh Phi Phi (approximately 90 minutes). Book ferry tickets in advance during high season - departures fill quickly.

Hiring a Car from HKT

Phuket has functional road infrastructure outside the main beach towns, and a hire car gives you flexibility to explore the island beyond the tourist corridors. Budget, Avis, Thai Rent A Car and local operators all have desks in the arrivals hall.

International driving licence required. Book in advance through GetRentacar to compare rates and secure availability during peak season. Note that driving in central Patong is inefficient due to congestion and limited parking - a hire car is most useful if you are based outside the main beach areas.

Practical Tips

Do not accept unsolicited offers from drivers in the arrivals hall. Unlicensed touts operate at most Thai airports. Use the official AOT desk or the Grab app for all transport.
Have your hotel address in Thai script if possible, particularly for areas where streets are unsigned or where Google Maps accuracy is unreliable (common in Rawai and Nai Harn).
Allow extra time in high season. November–March is the busiest period. The main road from Phuket Town through Kathu to Patong (Route 4029) becomes a serious bottleneck after 16:00.
Get a SIM at the airport. AIS and DTAC have counters in arrivals. An eSIM for Thailand can be activated before you land - essential for Grab and maps from the moment you exit the terminal.
If staying in Patong, budget hotels on the main Bangla Road strip are walking distance from the songthaew stops - once you are on the island, local songthaews run approximately THB 30–50 per person for short hops.
