Koh Samui Airport Transfer Guide: USM to Chaweng, Lamai & Bophut

Koh Samui Airport (IATA: USM) is a private terminal owned by Bangkok Airways - one of the only privately owned commercial airports in Southeast Asia. It is small, efficient, and unlike most Thai airports it does not operate metered taxis. All ground transport runs on fixed rates, and prices are noticeably higher than on the mainland. Factor this into your budget: a taxi to Chaweng Beach is not THB 150 as it might be for a comparable distance in Chiang Mai.

Airport Layout

USM is compact and pleasantly designed with an open-air structure. The taxi and transport desk is immediately outside arrivals, staffed and clearly signed. There is no separate Grab zone - Grab availability on Koh Samui is limited and unreliable at the airport itself, though it works reasonably well for rides within the island once you are at your hotel.

Fixed-Rate Taxis - The Standard Option

The airport operates authorised fixed-rate taxis through the AOT/airport transport desk in arrivals. Rates are displayed on a board and there is no negotiation - pay at the desk, receive a voucher, wait for your driver. Vehicles are air-conditioned sedans.

Approximate fixed rates from USM (as of 2026):

• To Bophut / Fisherman’s Village: approximately THB 400–500 (10–15 minutes)
• To Chaweng Beach: approximately THB 500–650 (15–20 minutes)
• To Choeng Mon / north coast: approximately THB 450–550 (15–20 minutes)
• To Lamai Beach: approximately THB 600–750 (20–30 minutes)
• To Nathon / west coast: approximately THB 500–650 (20–25 minutes)
• To Na Muang / south: approximately THB 700–850 (30–35 minutes)

These rates are higher than you would pay for an equivalent journey in most Thai mainland destinations. The private airport ownership structure and the island’s geographic isolation from competition contribute to elevated transport prices generally on Samui. Budget for airport transfers as a notable line item, particularly if you plan multiple trips between the airport and town during your stay.

Shared Minivan - Budget Option

Some hotels and resort areas are served by shared minivan transfers that depart from the airport on a semi-fixed schedule. These are cheaper than private taxis - approximately THB 150–200 per person to Chaweng - but they involve waiting for the vehicle to fill, and potentially multiple stops at other hotels before your own.

This option works well if you are staying in a major resort cluster (Chaweng is the most reliably served) and are flexible on timing. It is less suitable for late-night arrivals or if you are staying in a villa or smaller property off the main hotel strips.

Some tour operators and accommodation providers offer free or subsidised shuttle transfer from USM as part of a booking - worth checking before arriving.

Private Transfer - Recommended for Groups

Given the fixed-rate pricing structure on Samui, the premium for a private transfer over the airport taxi desk is relatively small - often only THB 100–200 more, particularly for longer-distance destinations on the south coast.

Operators including Kiwitaxi, Welcome Pickups and GetTransfer allow online pre-booking with a confirmed price. The key advantage is having your driver confirmed in advance, particularly useful for early morning or late-night arrivals when the airport transport desk may have queues.

For groups of three or more or families with multiple bags, a private van beats the per-person taxi rate comfortably. A van to Chaweng for a party of four starts from approximately THB 700–900 - less per head than the individual fixed-rate taxi.

Grab on Koh Samui

Grab exists on Koh Samui but is not consistently available at the airport. Coverage is better in central Chaweng and Lamai than at USM itself. If you have a Thai SIM or roaming data, it is worth attempting a Grab booking when you land - if a driver is available, fares will typically be slightly lower than the fixed-rate desk.

Do not rely on Grab as your primary plan for airport pickup. It works well for getting around the island once you are at your hotel.

Getting to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao from USM

Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are the island-hopping destinations most commonly paired with a Samui trip. Neither is accessible by air from USM - you will take a ferry.

To Koh Phangan: Ferries depart from Na Thon Pier (west coast) and Maenam Pier (north coast). Journey time is approximately 30–50 minutes depending on the service. Operators include Raja Ferry and Songserm. Fares approximately THB 200–300 per person. Book through your accommodation or at the pier.

The closest pier to USM is Maenam, roughly 20 minutes by taxi (approximately THB 450–500 from the airport). Factor this into your itinerary if you plan to island-hop immediately.

To Koh Tao: High-speed catamaran from Na Thon Pier, approximately 1.5–2 hours. Fares approximately THB 400–600 per person. Lomprayah and Songserm operate this route.

Leaving the Island: Important Notes

Koh Samui Airport charges a departure tax (usually already included in Bangkok Airways ticket prices, but worth confirming). If you are taking a connecting flight onwards from Bangkok after departing USM, allow adequate connection time - delays out of Samui are common during monsoon months (October–November).

If your itinerary brings you back to the mainland by sea rather than air, the Lomphrayah high-speed ferry to Surat Thani takes approximately 3–4 hours. From Surat Thani you can connect to trains or buses to Bangkok or south to Malaysia.

Practical Tips

• Book accommodation with airport transfer included. Several mid-range and upmarket resorts in Chaweng and Lamai include complimentary airport pickup as part of the booking. Check before paying for a separate taxi.
• Samui is not cheap. The island’s transport, food, and accommodation costs run higher than Thai mainland destinations. Budget accordingly for your stay, not just the airport transfer.
• High season (December–February) brings queues. The airport transport desk can have meaningful queues after a fully loaded Bangkok Airways 737 disgorges 160 passengers at once. Pre-booked transfers bypass this.
• Stay connected. Pick up a SIM card at USM (AIS counter in arrivals) or activate an eSIM for Thailand before landing - useful for Grab within the island and restaurant navigation in Chaweng.
• No public buses from USM. Unlike Phuket’s Smart Bus, Samui has no scheduled public bus route from the airport to beach areas. Your options are taxis, minivans, or pre-booked private transfers - there is no budget route equivalent.
